Begin maart, ook al vroor het ’s nachts nog, begonnen we aan het nieuwe tuinseizoen. Mijn vrouw stond, zoals ieder jaar, op hete kolen. ‘Vorig jaar hadden we al half februari gezaaid in de serre!’
Hoe zou je dat nu ‘niet’ weten als je dat veertien dagen lang iedere dag ingelepeld krijgt? En had ik al willen gebaren van hardhorigheid, de bakken vol voorgezaaide tuinbonen in de eetkamer vielen moeilijk te negeren. Zelf fungeer ik eerder als een oude dieselmotor die ’s ochtends wel wilt starten, ALS je hem tenminste eerst wat opwarming gunt. Een beetje zorg en aandacht verrichten wonderen. Tuingrond die dat niet doet, heeft nog duidelijk last van kou en/of vocht. Geduldig wachten is dan de boodschap, het ene seizoen is immers het andere niet.
Ondertussen eten we toch maar volop snijsla, radijzen en spinazie uit de koude serre en lijken de voorgezaaide tuinbonen, in vergelijking met de vollegronds gezaaide, liters groeihormonen te hebben gekregen. Dat kregen ze natuurlijk niet. Aandacht en dagelijkse zorg volstonden.
In de tuin zorgt de natuur grotendeels voor zichzelf. De asperges groeien terwijl je er naar kijkt en de rabarberplanten, al liggen ze aan de noorderkant, stuwen hun stengels resoluut richting zon. Wonderbaarlijk hoe de natuur elke lente opnieuw, zonder opdracht of toestemming, van scratch terug tot wasdom komt. Wat een mateloze, indrukwekkende energie! Wat een levenslust!
De lente is niet meer te stuiten. Dat beseffen ook de jonge erwten, die met hun voeten in de opgewarmde, aangeaarde grond, blozen in de zon.
Het gaat goed in mijn jonge voorjaarstuin en daar word ik dan weer op eenvoudige manier gelukkig van.
Hoe valt dit tuinmansgeluk te omschrijven? Wat telt er dan?
Ach … alles wat geteld kan worden, telt niet noodzakelijk; alles wat telt, kan niet noodzakelijk worden geteld en alles wat je aandacht geeft, groeit. Wie wordt daar nu niet gelukkig van?
