Begin dit jaar wekte Peter Goossens mijn nieuwsgierigheid voor de tomaat ‘Coeur de Boeuf’ in het programma ‘Mijn Restaurant’.
Mijn zoektocht daarna in diverse supermarkten leverde niets op.
Nergens was die tomaat te vinden.
Op de markt vroeg ik naar plantgoed maar de verkoper wist me te vertellen dat hij ze pas volgend jaar in het assortiment zou hebben. Omdat er zoveel vraag naar is!
De zomer komt en we vertrekken op vakantie naar Frankrijk. Wat wil het toeval nu? De eerste avond gaan we lekker eten, en wat krijgen we voorgeschoteld als amuse-gueule/ voorgerechtje: gazpacho van Coeur de boeuf. Lekker!
De volgende dag vind ik deze tomaat dan ook nog terug op de eerste de beste markt in een heel klein dorpje.
Het is echt een tomaat van formaat. De smaak valt echter wat tegen vind ik. Pas op er is niets verkeerd mee want het is een lekkere vlezige tomaat, maar voor de rest niet echt WOW.
Ik maak de bedenking dat mocht ik een aantal tomaten blindproeven, ik deze er waarschijnlijk niet als de beste zou uithalen.
Toch is het een tomaat die ik volgend jaar ook zelf wil telen.
Ik blijf zoeken. Zaad of plantgoed.

Zondag ga ik alvast richting Kalmthout voor het tomatenfestival in het Arboretum (4-5 september). Waarschijnlijk zijn daar wel verschillende tomagtenvariëteiten te vinden.
En volgend jaar ga ik gewoon terug naar Frankrijk…

Hehe, er zijn heel wat rassen die onder de naam Coeur de Boeuf of Oxheart of Cuor di Bue vallen. Ze hebben allemaal typisch een hartvorm – en net die zie ik niet in bovenstaande foto’s, want dat zijn eerder peervormen. O, en dan de kleuren: de meeste ossenharttomaten zijn eerder rozig dan rood, maar echt rood, oranje, gestreept, ‘zwart’, … bestaan ook allemaal.
Er zijn verschillende typen van Coeur de Boeuf.
Het originele type is hartvormig, dus bovenaan breed en onderaan met een punt. Dit type bevat zeer weinig zaden, is zeer teer (zacht) en smaakt lekker. De plant geeft een slordige indruk (lange, doorhangende trossen) en is wat moeilijker om te kweken.
Het type op de foto is peervormig, bovenaan puntig en onderaan breed. Dit type moet wat onrijp gegeten worden om nog (tamelijk) lekker te zijn. Dit type is stevig en is goed productief.
De lekkerste ossehart is voor mij ‘Herman’s Yellow’, een gele hartvormige tomaat met weinig sap en weinig zaden.
